Overview

Firefighters managers struggle to train their fire brigade due to a missing enhance experience in the current training process (to be more realistic and efficient)

Kodeless VR is a startup developing a platform that will allow learning managers to improve their training innovating with a new system based in 3D training spaces that later on firefighters could have practices in a VR format.

Our Role

It was a UX/UI group final project in Ironhack, where we got contact with our first client the startup Kodeless VR based in Malaga.

We had different task to delivery:

· Design a web app editing tool from scratch where firefighters managers has to create training spaces with an easy drag & drop system with no coding required.

· Redesign the logo and brand.

· Redesign the landing page.

First steps towards the training market

We started our research knowing better the learning & training market based in Learning Manager of big companies L&D departments.

Here some important highlights to understand the evolution from the e-learning Market:

The competitors

In our Competitor Analysis we focus on interviewing and got some general information from VR Trainings offering risk experiences for industrial use. The competitors were:

We investigated how VR experiences worked and especially how they present and guide the product to the Learning Manager. We got from them the following highlights:

  • For monetisation those companies often rely on monthly subscriptions and punctual in up purchases.
  • Learning Manager is processing it mostly in a desktop app where he can get predefined experiences or custom made.
  • Easy platform to use so they got onboarding documentation and some wizard guide to follow during first training creation.

Linking both worlds

We wanted to know more about the current way to train for firefighters to find the main problem, but also we needed to get deeper to know better how the VR experience works, mostly for risk trainings.

We decided to conduct our UX Research interviewing people as Learning Managers but also people related to VR Trainings and to VR experts in general.

To better understand learning manager behaviours, needs, and motivations, we found general firefighters findings as:

To conclude we came to the main insights from our research with Learning Managers:

Who’s our user dealing with?

We developed three different personas to encompass the three primary users we could foresee being influential in the Kodeless VR platform.

Among them are the training manager, responsible for implementing VR training and creating the training project from within the system. The training responsible for conducting and monitoring the training. And the organisation, which would be adopting the VR training.

Nice to meet you, Javi!

After a deep research and came out with his motivations, frustrations and needs , we met Javi Díaz, our user persona who is going to lead us in the whole process.

Let’s find Javi’s struggle

Let’s improve Javi’s experience:

Feature Prioritisation

We came to the following features according Javi’s needs evolving the previous solutions:

One of the core features of this system is that spaces can be built by merely dragging and dropping different objects to the workspace with no coding required. The amount and type of items that Javi can use depends on the subscription he has purchased. Objects that are not available for the user due to his subscription plan can be acquired in the integrated marketplace.

Before starting, Javi will be guided during first training creation by a wizard tutorial in order to know the efficient way to create a satisfactory training for his team.

Javi meet Kodeless VR platform

Once we had concluded with the main features, we came to the following scenario where Javi will be involved with Kodeless VR platform to create his first training..

Javi’s steps to create a successful training

We decided to draw the navigation of Javi trough Kodeless platform, considering the main parts he will have to follow to complete the training. Bellow we shown the flow of the whole Javi’s process.

Usability Testing

After developing a first skeleton of our prototype, we started doing some usability testing. We iterated to a total of 6 users in order to identify changes required to improve user performance and satisfaction.

Below the most relevant screens to be improved and why (some data provided):

Giving a meaningful identity to Kodeless VR

We had also the challenge to redesign the logo according some branding adjective Kodeless VR wanted to highlight.

To start with that, we created a style tile considering the following branding adjectives provided below:

And after some logos brainstorming, trying to find the right Kodeless message of the Brand, we found the final logo expressing the following concepts:

DESIRABILITY TESTING

We started creating three relevant screens in high fidelity. After that we did some desirability test to 5 users to check if we were in the correct way expressing our branding adjectives.

We shown the following screens with 15 possible branding adjective to pick including our branding adjectives (positives and negatives).

HEURISTIC EVALUATION

To conclude we decided to test our final high fidelity prototype doing some usability heuristics for user interface design. We used Jakob Nielsen’s 10 general principles for interaction design.

Landing Page Redesign

We redesign the landing page according to the new Kodeless VR logo & branding we created, but keeping the real purpose of value & mission of the company.

You can check the difference between the old and the redesign landing page.

And Kodeless VR website.

Let’s see how Javis’s experience looks like!
